Protecting Your Body While You Work
Practical advice for physically demanding jobs

Many people in our communities work in construction, housekeeping, warehouses, restaurants, and other physically demanding jobs. These jobs can be hard on your body, especially your back, joints, lungs, and heart. Long hours, heavy lifting, and exposure to dust or chemicals increase the risk of injuries and long‑term health problems.
The pressure to keep working—even while in pain—can make people ignore early warning signs. Protecting your health at work is not a luxury; it is essential for being able to support your family today and in the future.
Tips to stay safer at work
● Use safe lifting techniques: bend your knees, keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting.
● Wear appropriate protective gear like gloves, helmets, eye protection, and masks or respirators when needed.
● Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration, especially in hot environments.
● Take short stretch breaks to loosen muscles during long shifts.
● Report hazards, unsafe equipment, or symptoms like persistent pain or shortness of breath to your supervisor and occupational health, if available.
When to call your doctor or occupational health provider
● Persistent pain, numbness, or weakness linked to your job.
● A fall, blow, or accident at work, especially with head or back injury.
● Breathing problems after dust, fumes, or chemical exposure.
● Questions about when it is safe to return to work after an injury.
